Some weddings feel as though they've grown naturally from the landscape around them.
Grace and Adam’s beautiful riverside wedding on the banks of the River Teign, just outside Teignmouth, was exactly that. With a marquee overlooking the water, golden sunshine, hay bales scattered across the field and garden games bringing everyone together, it was the kind of relaxed Devon wedding that guests talk about long after the day is over.
As a documentary wedding photographer based in Devon, these smaller celebrations are some of my favourites to photograph. With fewer distractions and no pressure to follow a packed schedule, there’s space for genuine emotion, quiet moments and authentic photographs that tell the story of the day.

There’s something incredibly special about getting married outdoors in Devon.
With the River Teign flowing quietly nearby and the surrounding countryside providing the backdrop, Grace and Adam couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful setting. The marquee blended perfectly into the landscape, creating a relaxed yet elegant space for friends and family to gather throughout the day.
The sunshine certainly helped, but it was the atmosphere that made the day unforgettable.
From the moment guests arrived, everything felt easy-going.
Children played on the grass, conversations drifted between the tables, and there was no pressure to follow a rigid timetable. Hay bales became places to sit and chat, drinks flowed freely and everyone simply enjoyed being together.
It’s exactly the sort of wedding where documentary photography comes into its own because the best moments aren’t planned—they just happen naturally.
One of my favourite parts of the day was watching guests gather on the grass between the formalities.
Outdoor games brought together every generation, creating plenty of laughter and genuine moments that simply can’t be staged. While some guests competed enthusiastically, others relaxed in the sunshine, enjoying the beautiful riverside setting.
These unscripted moments often become some of the most treasured photographs from the day because they capture the atmosphere just as much as the people.
Outdoor marquee weddings always have their own rhythm.
There’s more freedom to wander, more opportunities for natural interactions and beautiful changing light throughout the day. Rather than disappearing for long portrait sessions, Grace and Adam were able to spend most of their wedding celebrating with their family and friends while I quietly documented everything as it unfolded.
Those real moments—the hugs, laughter, happy tears and little glances between the couple—are what tell the true story of a wedding day.
